EARLY LIFE

Born in South Africa in 1983, Nick Compton comes from a family of English cricketing royalty. He enjoyed a rapid rise through the sporting ranks after taking advantage of a scholarship to one of the UK’s top schools, Harrow School, before turning professional for MiddlesexCCC during his last year at school.

CRICKET

In 2012, Nick made his Test debut for England and enjoyed a stellar, multi award-winning year featuring a number of truly memorable batting performances.

During long seasons away from home Nick developed a passion for photographing some of the diverse locations in which he found himself, and started to finesse a style that has stood him in good stead ever since.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Nick retired from professional cricket in 2018, and turned to photography as a means to de-stress from some of the pressures of playing at the highest level for almost 20 years.

Through his lens, he began photographing cultures and people around the globe creating a deep connection with these places. Part social documentarian and part photojournalist, Nick has an almost meditative approach to the scenes in front of him and his lens. There is a freedom that runs across this seasoned photographer’s compositions; he is a wanderer looking for new stories and new perspectives; a man in search of something bigger than himself.

LEGACY

A life in motion, both successful and imperfect.

Nick’s autobiography 'Legacy’ was published in 2023. The book documents both Nick’s intense drive to realise a long- held ambition to reach the top of the sport, and the psychological challenges and difficulties that he, along with many other sports people, confronted in attaining international representation.

The book was nominated for the 'Sports Book of the year award 2023’. Nick use’s his book as a tool to help young athletes build resilience when faced with the mental and emotional challenges that often accompany ones pursuit of excellence in sports.

BOOK REVIEWS

  • Very deep and emotional reading

Amazingly in depth book and very honest about the mental struggles Nick has been through. Would highly recommend this book

  • Intense

I enjoyed this book but found Nick Compton comes across as a very intense character. He is very open and discusses every aspect of his career. Compton gives an insight into the dressing rooms he was part of and the personalities he came across. You do finish the book wishing him well and hoping he settles and is happy.

    All the best Compo!

  • honest read about a powerful man and player.

despite being a kent fan, i was very pleased nick compton had written this book. i wasnt as aware as i should of been probably, of his mental health issues. i think nick should take a lot of credit writing so openly about his health. he writes honestly about his county and international career. i found the book very interesting, and would recommend to any cricket fan this book. and his chapters about photography and where he has taken some great pictures was also very interesting.

  • Brutally honest

I read lots of sports autobiographies. You get a wide spectrum, from bland to brilliant. But it's rare to read one and finish really rooting for the author. In this case I did. I wasn't sure I'd like this. But it was probably the most heartfelt autobiography I've read. Good luck Nick.

  • brilliant read
